As Britain braces itself for the arrival of Storm Agnes, leading insurer Aviva is advising residents and business owners to prepare for the severe weather by carrying out checks to their properties to help prevent storm damage.

According to Aviva research, almost half of UK residents (45%)1 - equivalent to 23.7 million Brits2 - have previously experienced damage to their homes due to extreme weather.

Last year, Aviva helped more than 20,0003 customers across the UK deal with storm claims. Common claims included missing roof tiles and broken windows.

Taking preventative steps ahead of a storm can help to limit the damage and distress that it can cause. Storm Agnes is set to bring gale-force winds and heavy rain to many parts of the UK from Wednesday, with damage to buildings expected.

"Taking preventative steps ahead of a storm can help to limit the damage and distress that it can cause. Storm Agnes is set to bring gale-force winds and heavy rain to many parts of the UK from Wednesday, with damage to buildings expected.

"If it's safe to do so, we'd urge people to take measures now to help protect their properties and vehicles. The worst of the bad weather is likely to impact Scotland, northern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Some coastal areas may see windspeeds of up to 80 mph.

"If the worst does happen, Aviva claims teams are always on standby to help people whose homes, business or vehicles have suffered weather-related damage. Aviva customers can register their claim online 24/7 or through the MyAviva app."

Aviva's storm-ready checklist to help people protect themselves, their properties, and vehicles:

Before the storm, if it's safe to do so:

  • Inspect your roof for any missing / loose tiles or slates or areas of damage. Aviva research suggests roof damage is the most common home issue caused by extreme weather.
  • Inspect trees and branches in your garden and remove hazardous branches if safe and possible to do so.
  • Safely store away garden furniture, tools, ornaments, bikes or children's play equipment, including trampolines, which can easily blow away. Make sure any large pieces that can't be moved are secure.
  • Secure your fences and gates and ensure posts are sturdy and there are no loose or missing panels.
  • If possible, park the car in a garage, or away from large trees, walls or fences that could fall.
  • Ensure gutters and downpipes are attached securely and clear out your gutters and drains to prevent water overflowing and water damage.
  • If you live in an area that floods move important items upstairs.
  • Prepare a storm emergency kit in case you need to leave your home. Pack warm clothes, medicines, a torch and batteries.
  • Reschedule travel plans where possible.
  • Read your home insurance documents so you know what is covered just in case you need to make a claim.

During the storm:

  • Make sure all doors and windows are closed and sealed to avoid water entering your home.
  • Keep pets indoors to keep them safe.
  • Stay inside where possible. If you do need to make an essential trip, make sure you are properly equipped.
  • Don't try to repair damage while the storm's still in progress. Property can be repaired, and it's more important to stay safe.

After the storm:

  • If your home or belongings have been damaged, contact your insurer as soon as possible to let them know what has happened.
  • List any damage to your property and don't throw anything away in case it's needed for the claims process.
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours. You could help them make any arrangements for repairs if they've had any damage.
