Specialists at Gazprom Neft-Rosneft joint venture Messoyakhaneftegaz have developed a 'digital twin' of the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field. This integrated digital model of the Arctic oilfield (the northernmost onshore field in Russia) brings together various modules, each covering a specific stage in production at the field - development, production, oil and gas processing and transportation, and reservoir pressure maintenance. Helped by digital tools, Messoyakha specialists have developed digital twins for each of the 550 wells in the production and injection well stock, have modelled around 500 kilometres of pipeline system, and have developed an integrated fluid-hydrocarbon flow model, covering transit from wells to oil gathering and treatment facilities.

A software suite can quickly work out optimum production scenarios at a horizon, over a period of one day to one year, in line with that strata's unique geological features, process parameters and infrastructure capacity. The accuracy of calculations undertaken using the integrated field model stands at more than 97%. Using this integrated digital field model, the Messoyakhaneftegaz team can process large amounts of data quickly, identify any deviations from set parameters at each stage of the operational cycle, regulate production, and manage the asset's full potential.

'The new, high-tech solutions we are creating for working with hard-to-recover reserves in the Arctic are significantly expanding our capabilities in terms of safe and cost-effective resource development. Digital twins of fields are helping synchronise the use of AI technologies in operational processes, at various stages of the production cycle, as well as helping us address highly complex engineering tasks quickly and accurately, and increasing scope in strategic planning. On the basis of projections generated by 'Smart Assistants', we can be flexible in managing the potential of our assets, optimising this to the fullest extent.'
Vadim YakovlevDeputy CEO for Exploration and Production, Gazprom Neft
'An integrated field model means the most complex production processes can be managed remotely. For an oilfield team in a standalone Arctic field, this is a key factor in improving efficiency in developing hard-to-recover reserves in the Arctic Circle. Artificial intelligence (AI) is giving us the chance to unlock the full potential of a field, respond to challenges quickly, as they arise, and improve quality in decision making, at every stage of the operations chain. When it comes to developing a field as complex as the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye, it's very important to identify bottlenecks in good time, and to predict what's going to happen with regard to individual elements in an integrated oil-production system: Industry 4.0 tools are helping us do that.'

Notes for editors

The Messoyakha group of fields includes the Vostochno (Eastern) and Zapadno (Western) Messoyakhskoye blocks located in the Gydan Peninsula, in the Tazovsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The field is considered unique in terms of its proved reserves. The project is being implemented with very limited access to industrial and transportation infrastructure. Licences to both blocks are held by Messoyakhaneftegaz, jointly owned by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft (operator on the project). President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, gave the instruction to commence commercial production at the field via video link on 21 September 2016. Total production at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field stood at more than 20 million tonnes as at February 2021.
