The joint chair of U.K. investment banking at Swiss bank UBS Group AG will be on secondment for two years as the director general of the Takeover Panel, an independent body supervising and regulating takeovers.

Ian Hart said it was a "great privilege" to have been offered the role of director general of the Takeover Panel, in a statement Thursday.

Mr. Hart will start his new role on July 1. The veteran investment banker, with more than 30 years' experience in the sector, has also worked at Morgan Stanley and Schroders, according to the Panel's statement. Mr. Hart started his career at S.G. Warburg in 1990, a London-based bank that was acquired by UBS.

Data from MergerLinks found that the banker was ranked 26 in a list of the top 30 dealmakers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in 2020, with two deals of a value of 3.5 billion pounds ($4.82 billion) that year.
