Ayco Farms said recent media coverage has incorrectly characterized a cantaloupe recall as ongoing and said cantaloupes that were distributed in December and January and voluntarily recalled never tested positive for salmonella.
According to a notice on a Food and Drug Administration website, the recall was initiated March 24 and classified as Class I, the highest risk level, on April 20.
On April 10, Ayco said inclusion in the FDA's weekly enforcement report reflected the previously completed recall. The company said at the time that "all product associated with this matter had already passed its shelf life and was no longer in commerce at the time of the March notification."
The recall included 8,302 cartons. The cantaloupes were distributed in Pennsylvania, Florida, California and New York.
Ayco Farms, of Pompano Beach, Fla., supplies melons, pineapple, asparagus and peas.
