Flat Glass Group shares rose sharply Tuesday after the Chinese solar-glass provider reported third-quarter earnings.

The stock rose as much as 13% to 12.20 Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to US$1.57, and is on track for its biggest one-day gain this year. Shares were last 12% higher at HK$12.12.

The company's third-quarter gross profit margin widened from a year earlier despite the average solar-glass market price falling compared with a year ago, Citi analysts said in a note.

Revenue for the three months rose 21% from the year-ago period to 4.73 billion yuan, equivalent to US$665.2 million, likely due to higher sales volumes.

While Flat Glass's revenue and gross profit margin were better than Citi anticipated, the Citi analysts are unsure if this upwards earnings trend will persist. Citi maintained a sell rating on the stock.

Flat Glass reported third-quarter net profit of 376.5 million yuan, plunging sharply from a year ago.
