The New York Times was sued Tuesday by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for allegedly discriminating against a white male editor because of his race and gender.
The EEOC says the newspaper passed him over for a senior editorial job in order to meet diversity goals.
It says that violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964, with the move reflecting the body's shift to align with the policies of Donald Trump.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Times veteran who sought a promotion last year.
According to the complaint, he was passed over despite being qualified, with the post going to a less experienced multiracial woman.
The EEOC claims the Times acted with "malice or reckless indifference" toward the white editor's rights.
It is seeking back pay, damages, and an end to the newspaper's alleged discriminatory practices.
The New York Times strongly denied the claims, calling them politically motivated.
