Siemens said it had secured a contract valued at nearly $390 million to modernize New York City's Fulton-Liberty subway lines.
The German industrial conglomerate said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had awarded the contract to Siemens Mobility in collaboration with L.K. Comstock, an electrical contractor that specializes in rail transit systems.
The company said it would modernize 23 stations, replace outdated track circuits and introduce 5G-based radio communications for real-time train control that will make it safe and possible for trains to run as close as 90 seconds apart.
Siemens Mobility said it would also take on a 25-year maintenance contract, with the option for two additional five-year extensions once the system modernization is complete. The Fulton Line travels through Central Brooklyn and connects to the Liberty Line, which begins at Euclid Avenue Station and concludes in Ozone Park, Queens.
