(Alliance News) - Eni Spa and MSC Cruises announced on Tuesday the completion of a pilot program involving the use of Enilive's Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil diesel to power cruise ship engines, confirming the technical feasibility of using pure biofuel in the maritime sector.
Specifically, one of the engines on the MSC Opera cruise ship was powered by pure HVO for approximately 2,000 hours without any engine modifications, while performance and emissions data were monitored throughout the period.
'The test demonstrated that HVO represents an immediately applicable solution for marine engines without the need for significant technological upgrades, ensuring performance in line with traditional marine fossil fuels', the company stated.
The trial also recorded a 16% reduction in both NOx and particulate emissions, as well as an 80% decrease in GHG emissions compared to traditional fuel use. This reduction is attributed to the use of 100% biogenic raw materials in the HVO production process.
Eni shares were trading up 0.5% at EUR23.575 per share on Tuesday.
