GlobalFoundries Sues Tower Semiconductor for Patent Infringement
The US chipmaker has launched legal proceedings against rival Tower Semiconductor for the alleged infringement of several patents. The company is notably seeking an import ban on certain chips entering the United States.
GlobalFoundries has filed complaints against Tower Semiconductor, alleging the violation of 11 patents related to the manufacturing of semiconductors used in smartphones and other electronic devices. The lawsuits were filed in a Texas federal court as well as with the International Trade Commission (ITC). In the ITC proceeding, the U.S.-based firm is seeking an exclusion order to block the importation of Tower-produced chips utilizing the technologies in question into the United States.
Both groups operate in the specialty semiconductor segment, a market distinct from the leading-edge chips dominated by players such as TSMC or Intel. They focus on niche areas including radio frequency (RF) components and silicon photonics, which are essential for a wide range of electronic applications.
This litigation comes amid a period of surging investment in the semiconductor industry. GlobalFoundries recently announced a $16bn plan to bolster its production and research capabilities in the United States, specifically in New York and Vermont, highlighting the intensifying technological competition.
