EMDEN (dpa-AFX) - Lower Saxony's Minister President Olaf Lies has stated that he firmly believes in the future of the VW plant in Emden, East Frisia. During a panel discussion at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Emden Kunsthalle, the SPD politician responded to the moderator's question regarding a site guarantee for VW in Emden: 'Yes, there is one. There is no alternative,' said the head of government, who also sits on the automaker's supervisory board. Around 7,700 people are employed at VW in Emden, making it the most significant industrial employer in East Frisia.
Following a multi-billion euro investment in the facility, VW now exclusively manufactures electric vehicles such as the ID.7 in Emden. 'We bet on the right future here at the right time,' Lies asserted. He noted that the future will be electrified and that Emden is a pioneer in this regard. 'We see now that we have the right models.'
Expectations for VW Management
The SPD politician further emphasized that the Emden VW plant is more than just a production site. 'These are incredibly great colleagues here,' Lies said. 'And in the end, I also expect those in senior management positions to not only think about what they are doing, but above all to reflect on who ensured the company's success, and that was the many colleagues (...).'
Only a few days ago, VW Group CEO Oliver Blume announced in 'Manager Magazin' that production capacities would be reduced worldwide in light of the difficult market environment. 'Overcapacities are not sustainable for our company in the long term,' Blume had stated. 'And in today's market and competitive situation, the volume planning of the past is unrealistic.' According to Blume, a decision on whether plants must be closed as a result has not yet been made.
Blume also remarked: 'There are smarter methods than immediately closing a plant.' Volkswagen is currently cutting a total of 50,000 jobs in Germany across its core brand and particularly its subsidiaries Audi and Porsche to reduce costs. The state of Lower Saxony holds a 20 percent stake in the VW Group.
Lies supports new naval port in Emden
During his visit to East Frisia, the Minister President also spoke in favor of Emden as the location for a new Bundeswehr naval port. The Navy is currently investigating whether a second naval port should be built on the North Sea coast alongside the naval base in Wilhelmshaven. Lies stated that the final decision rests with the Navy and the Federal Ministry of Defense. 'But if another port is required, and it looks that way, then it can only be Emden.' Emden has a long tradition as a seaport city. He added that he has the impression the population supports the project./len/DP/he
