STORY: :: Sheinbaum says 'stricter checks' are needed after a fatal shooting at Mexico's Teotihuacan pyramids

"Perhaps the question is, how did he get in with a weapon? That is the question everyone is asking. There are no security checkpoints at archaeological sites; there never have been. Why? Because these kinds of situations had not occurred. Evidently, now that this has happened, as authorities we have to say that there must be stricter checks so that no one enters an archaeological site or a public place with a firearm." // "Our solidarity goes out to the family of the person who lost their life and to all the people who are being treated in hospitals and who went through this situation yesterday."

An armed man with a pistol opened fire on tourists in broad daylight on Monday (April 20) at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon at the archaeological site, located about 31 miles (50 kilometers) from the capital, causing scenes of panic before taking his own life with a gunshot.

The attacker acted alone and his attack was planned, according to Mexican authorities, a day after the tragedy claimed the life of a Canadian tourist and injured 13 other visitors.

At President Claudia Sheinbaum's daily press conference, authorities from the State of Mexico, where Teotihuacan is located, said that seven of the 13 injured suffered gunshot wounds and that six had already been discharged from the hospital.

The injured are from Canada, the United States, Colombia, Russia, Brazil, and the Netherlands, officials said.
