In commodities, Brent crude gained 4.8% to $97.59 a barrel, and WTI crude rose 4.5% to $94.58 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 5% to 50.94 euros a megawatt hour.
The German 10-year Bund yield rose by 1 basis point to 3.06% from 3.049%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury climbed by 5 basis points to 4.573% from 4.522%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Stocks in Asia were down as Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined 3.8%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 1.5%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite declined 1.7%.
