(Alliance News) - UniCredit's takeover bid for Commerzbank remains in the spotlight, with CEO Andrea Orcel working toward a launch of the exchange offer on May 5, according to a report by La Repubblica on Wednesday.

Rumors, fueled by German politicians and trade unions, have resurfaced regarding a potential relocation of the headquarters to Germany. However, the group has denied these claims, reaffirming its commitment to remaining in Italy.

The issue is also causing political friction, as the newspaper reports: Marco Osnato, chairman of the Finance Committee, suggested a possible government intervention should national interests be at risk, despite the constraints of Golden Power regulations.

Finally, Orcel clarified that without securing control, UniCredit could pause for 12 to 18 months, reactivate its EUR4.75 billion buyback program, and rebuild capital for future transactions.
