BERLIN (dpa-AFX) - In light of looming jet fuel supply gaps, the German Airport Association (ADV) is warning of potential flight cancellations and price hikes. 'It is to be feared that further flights will be cancelled, particularly among low-cost carriers and at destinations of lesser touristic significance,' Ralph Beisel, Managing Director of the ADV, told 'Welt am Sonntag'.

'The best-case scenario for 2026 is a stagnation in passenger growth. In the worst-case scenario, some airports face a 10 percent collapse in capacity. Extrapolated across all airports, 20 million passengers would be affected,' said Beisel. Some destinations would no longer be served at all, while others would see reduced frequencies and higher fares.

As a result of oil transport disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz due to the war in Iran, jet fuel prices have skyrocketed. Several airlines have already cancelled flights as a consequence.

'Jet fuel prices have been twice as high as they were before the war for more than two months. We do not expect a normalization in the coming months either,' Beisel said. 'Even if kerosene is available, airlines will not be able to operate many flights profitably at these prices.'/evy/DP/zb
