Chevron's 290,500 b/d El Segundo, California refinery near Los Angeles reported a unit shutdown due to a process leak, the company said in a Hazardous Materials Spill Report to the California Governor's Emergency Services on Thursday.
The incident took place on April 10, the filing showed. It also attributed the unspecified shutdown to a process unit leak, adding that over 100 lb. of hydrogen sulfide was released over more than six hours.
Ross Allen, a Chevron spokesman, said in a Friday statement that the El Segundo refinery on April 10 identified a vapor leak at its crude unit No. 2, also known as 2CU.
"The refinery immediately implemented leak response procedures, and 2CU was shut down in a controlled manner," Allen said, adding that the source of the leak was subsequently secured and resolved.
Chevron's El Segundo refinery provides more than 35% of the jet fuel used at the LAX International Airport and about a quarter of Southern California's motor vehicle fuel.
