Waymo is recalling a group of vehicles over concerns that its autonomous-driving software may allow its cars to slow and then drive into standing water on higher-speed roadways.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said entering a flooded roadway can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
The recall covers nearly 3,800 of Waymo's 5th- and 6th-generation automated driving systems.
A remedy is currently under development, the NHTSA said.
Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet, in the interim has modified the scope of vehicle operations to increase weather-related constraints, as well as updated the vehicle maps.
