Jailed Iranian Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi was rushed to a hospital in Iran on Friday, after suffering a "catastrophic deterioration of her health".

That's according to a foundation in her name run by her family.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee secretary had expressed concern on Thursday that the condition of the human rights activist was worsening after she had suffered a heart attack in prison.

In an update on Saturday, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said she was receiving oxygen and called for her to be transferred to a hospital that can provide specialized treatment.

Mohammadi was in prison when she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her campaign to advance women's rights and abolish the death penalty in Iran.

She has been imprisoned repeatedly in her three-decade rights campaign.

Mohammadi was sentenced to a new prison term of 7.5 years, the foundation said in February, over charges involving national security and propaganda against the government.

Her family said she now faces a "direct and immediate" threat to her right to life, and called for "all sentences imposed for her peaceful human rights work to be unconditionally annulled."
